ULAANBAATAR – KHUVSGUL – ULAANBAATAR – SOUTH GOBI – ULAANBAATAR, 18 DAYS
Location: Khuvsgul and South Gobi provinces.
Nestled among boreal forests of the mountainous Khuvsgul province lies the ”Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia”: the ancient Lake Khuvsgul is believed to be millions of years old and is one of the cleanest freshwater lakes in the world. It is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, and holds almost 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water supplies. The locals reverently call the great lake the “Mother Sea” and the surrounding area is under state protection as the Lake Khuvsgul National Park. At least 46 tributary rivers traverse this region lush with rugged peaks, rolling hills, pristine forests and wildflower meadows. The forests and valleys are home to a variety of wildlife, and birdlife is likewise varied and interesting with over 240 bird species visiting the park year over year. Whether you prefer a challenging hike in the mountains, horse-trek through the valleys or a leisurely walk along the lakeshore, the stunning scenery can be enjoyed by all. Get on a boat or a kayak to find yourself immersed in the shimmering beauty of the crystal clear water of the lake.
Day 1: Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar and transfer to hotel.
Day 2: Ulaanbaatar | Bulgan town | Ger camp [468km]
In After breakfast, we will start our journey to Khuvsgul province. On the way we will drive through Zaamar plateau known for its gold mining and continue to Bulgan town, the center of Bulgan province. We will cross a couple of small rivers, lush meadows and valleys on the road up to Bulgan town. After refilling our jeep in town, we’ll continue west and arrive at a ger camp where we will stay for the night.
Day 3: Ger camp | Murun town [363km]
Today we will drive further north-west passing through beautiful landscapes. When we reach the Selenge river we will have a picnic lunch on the banks. Selenge is the largest river of Mongolia and drains into Lake Baikal in Siberia. It flows for total of 992km, of which 593 km passes through the Mongolian territory. Selenge river collects 30.6 % of the total flow of all the rivers in Mongolia. Baikal Sturgeon, Taimen, Lenok, Umber, Pike, Siberian Roach, Golden Carp, Mirror Carp, Amur Catfish and River Perch are the main fish species found in Selenga. Lodge in tents near Murun town.
Day 4: Murun town | Ger camp [160km]
In the morning our trip will continue northward via Murun and Hatgal towns to a ger camp on the shore of Khuvsgul Lake. From the ger camp you will have a direct view of the lake. We will be inside the Khuvsgul National Park, which includes the great lake and its watershed. The ancient Lake Khuvsgul is believed to be millions of years old and is one of the cleanest freshwater lakes in the world. It is the second-most voluminous freshwater lake in Asia, and holds almost 70% of Mongolia’s fresh water supplies. At night we’ll stay in a ger camp.
Day 5: Free day at ger camp
This day will be spent at leisure. Travelers can walk around and enjoy the fresh air of the lake. On the western side of Khuvsgul Lake located is Mt. Khoridol Saridag Uul. The mountain is composed mostly of limestone and covered by forests, and is home to elk, reindeer, argali and Siberian ibex.
Day 6: Ger camp | Ikh Uul Village [275km]
Today we will continue our trip. The road goes south via Hatgal port and Murun town. The port of Hatgal is located on the southern tip of the the lake. Murun is the center of Khuvsgul province situated in the valley of Delgermoron River at an altitude of 1283 m above sea level. After lunch in the open air, we will arrive at campsite nearby Rashaant village, where we’ll put our tents for night.
Day 7: Ikh Uul Village | Erdenet City [328km]
We’ll continue to drive south-east, the Ulziit Village. Today we’ll have an open air picnic lunch. At night we’ll stay at campsite in tents.
Day 8: Erdenet city | Ulaanbaatar [410km]
Today we will reach Darkhan city in a short time have lunch. Afterwards we’ll drive to Ulaanbaatar.
Day 9: Ulaanbaatar
Day 10: Ulaanbaatar | Baga Gazriin Chuluu [269km]
The new day starts, the new trip starts…
We’ll drive to the south from Ulaanbaatar as beginning of our South Gobi tour.
On this day our aim is to reach the Baga Gazryn Chuluu, rocky mountain (1768 m), which standing in steppe-desert zone. Area around of this Mountain named as Blue oasis and here many interesting things to see, such as Eye spa, Jargalant cave, etc. for night we are planning to stay in tourist camp.
Day 11: Baga Gazriin Chuluu | Ger camp [417km]
Today we should drive more, because our next destination is Juulchin Gobi tourist camp in South Gobi aimag. By road we’ll see many camels, which are popular there and probably, mirage. At night we’ll stay in Juulchin Gobi tourist camp, enjoying enigma.
Day 12: Yoliin Am [140km]
After breakfast we’ll drive approximately 70 km to reach the Yolyn am, narrow canyon in Gobi Gurvan Saikhan mountain range. The gorge has sheer rock walls with a height of about 200 m in the central part. Despite the sunshine, in the narrowest part can pass only two people. Very often in the sky of gorge, you can see few eagles. At evening we’ll be back at Juulchin Gobi tourist camp, where we can find all conforts plus evening performance.
Day 13: Ger camp | Erdenedalai Village [395km]
On this day we’ll drive back to the north. By road we’ll meet some sand dunes, oasis, desert plants.
The road lies through Mandal Ovoo and Saikhan Ovoo villages, maybe where we ought to need to refill our jeeps by fuel. At end of the day, we’ll arrive to Dundgobi tourist camp nearby Erdenedalai village.
Day 14: Erdenedalai Village | Ulaanbaatar [265km]
Today is the last day of our trip in the Gobi. After a leisurely morning and lunch in the open air we’ll continue drive to Ulaanbaatar and arrive in the evening.
Day 15: Ulaanbaatar | Terelj
In the late morning we’ll drive to the Terelj National Park which has a beautiful alpine scene with interesting rock formations. In the afternoon enjoy a short horseback riding excursion. At night we’ll stay in a ger camp.
Day 16: Terelj | Ulaanbaatar
In the morning we’ll cross the river and hike to the mountain beyond the meadow. Picnic lunch in the open air. In the evening we’ll be back to Ulaanbaatar.
Day 17: Ulaanbaatar
Free day for shopping. In the evening enjoy a farewell dinner.
Day 18: Ulaanbaatar | Departure
The vast Gobi desert straddles across southern Mongolia and northern China. The largest desert in Asia, it has captivated the imagination of adventurers for centuries. Explorers like Marco Polo, tradesmen of the Silk Road, and scientists who journeyed through the Gobi left behind an image of a mysterious and inhospitable land.
